The main reason for studying Mathematics is that it is an interesting and enjoyable subject. Mathematics is about pattern and structure; it is about logical analysis, deduction, calculation within these patterns and structures. People like its challenge, its clarity, and the fact that you know when you are right. All mathematicians must take Core Mathematics, but have a choice between Statistics and Mechanics for two of the six units. This course is designed for students who have achieved at least a B grade in IGCSE extended mathematics. Students must be able to work independently as this demanding course requires a lot of time and dedication. Students who fail to meet the recommended grade will be able to follow an IGCSE course to improve their GCSE results.
Unit 1: Core 1 Algebra and functions, Coordinate geometry, sequences and series and an Introduction to calculus.This is a non calculator unit.
Unit 4: Core 3
Knowledge of unit C1 and C2 is assumed.
Algebra; Trigonometry; Exponentials and Logarithms, Numerical Methods and Calculus (product, quotient and chain rule)
Unit 2: Core 2
Knowledge of unit C1 is assumed. Factor and Remainder theorem; Coordinate geometry of the circle; Sum of finite and infinite geometric series, Binomial expansion; Trigonometry, Logarithms, and applications of Calculus.
Unit 5: Core 4
Knowledge of unit C1, C2 and C3 is assumed.
Partial fractions; Parametric equations; differential equations; numerical integration; Vectors in three dimensions and volumes of revolution
Unit 3: M1 or S1
M1: A study of models and particles moving in straight lines.
S1: Discrete random variables; probability; regression and the Normal distribution.

Unit 6: M2 or S2
M2: Momentum; equilibrium; collisions; work and energy and centres of mass.
S2: The Binomial and Poisson distributions and hypothesis testing.
All units are externally assed by Edexcel in the summer exam session with a 1h30 written exam.SkillsClear thinking and deductive reasoning are valuable in all areas of modern life.
