English Language
In Key Stage 5 students have the option of studying
English Language or English Literature and both courses are offered at AS and A2
Level.
The AS and A Level English Language course gives students the opportunity to
study English language and its use in contemporary communication. It aims to
encourage a critical response to texts in a range of forms, styles and contexts,
and to promote skills of communication, reading, research and analysis. Through
their study, students develop an ability to read and analyse material, gaining
further knowledge and understanding of English language features and issues, and
writing clearly, accurately, creatively and effectively for different purposes
and audiences.
As well as the English AS and A2 courses, the English
Department prepares students for the IELTS exam which students take in Year 13
at the end of Term 1. The IELTS exam is an international English language exam
which assesses students’ language level in reading, writing, listening and
speaking, and is required by universities as evidence of English language
proficiency for overseas students.
The English Department is led by Mr. Frank Allen (Assistant Head: Meeting
Students’ Needs).
