English Literature

In Key Stage 5 students have the option of studying English Language or English Literature and both courses are offered at AS and A2 Level.
During the English Literature course students study a range of texts in the three main forms: prose, poetry and drama. The set texts are all Cambridge approved and are selected each year according to students’ backgrounds, interests and needs. They represent a wide range of different periods and cultures, and will always include a play by Shakespeare. During the AS and A2 course, students develop skills of reading and analysis of texts, and are encouraged to undertake wider reading to aid understanding of the texts studied. They learn skills of effective and appropriate communication, including the ability to discuss the critical context of texts.
As well as the English AS and A2 courses, the English Department prepares students for the IELTS exam which students take in Year 13 at the end of Term 1. The IELTS exam is an international English language exam which assesses students’ language level in reading, writing, listening and speaking, and is required by universities as evidence of English language proficiency for overseas students.

The English Department is led by Mr. Frank Allen (Assistant Head: Meeting Students’ Needs).
