Curriculum >> Key Stage 1 >> PE
In KS1 children develop their
‘Fundamental Movement Skills’ (FMS). These skills are critical in establishing
the foundation for participation in many sports and activities. It is believed
that a child who has not had the opportunity to develop these basic motor
skills experience difficulties when participating in sport later on in school.
Some of these skills include; rolling, skipping, hopping, catching, kicking and
dribbling.
Where possible we try to link
parts of the PE curriculum to the thematic approach in Primary. Throughout the year,
we will look at the various themes and incorporate key concepts, which can aid
in their learning. For example; in Term 1, the Year 1 topic theme is ‘Me, Myself
and I’. In PE we will look at self-awareness and understanding of body parts
used in different activities. In Year 2 the topic will begin with the theme
‘Under the Sea’. In PE, we will try to incorporate sea creatures and their
movements into Gym and Dance based activities.
